Our Menz Shed was established after an inaugural meeting of like minded men in December 2012. A steering committee was formed, an Incorporated Charitable Trust negotiated and Rules/Constitution prepared. To date we have a membership of 31, increased from the original 12. We lease a small area of building from the Pauanui Sports and Recreation Club in Sheppard Avenue, Pauanui. A considerable amount of small plant & tools has been donated by widows and local residents alike, who no longer have regular use of such ‘handyman’ equipment. We are most grateful of their generosity and most has been put to good use in the community. Such items vary in condition and need repairs or replacement at regular intervals.

To date we have produced DOC style stoat traps to help rid pests in the surrounding bush reserves, built bench for the local walking/cycle trail, repaired small furniture and the like for elderly residents, erected directional signs for the Businessmen’s Association, repaired board walks and carried out other works in support of our community.  Small items are produced from scrap materials and off cuts to help cover the costs of consumables.  We are a non profit organisation and exist mainly from the generosity of others.

Importantly we do not undertake projects or compete with local businesses or tradesmen.

It was quiet first thing at the MENZSHED Tuesday 21 July – no hammering, sawing, buzzing or screwing as it was a special day for the ‘Sheddies’.  Keith Hardy introduced sausage making and they were so confident the wives and partners were invited to a sausage luncheon. Sheddies relished getting their rubber gloved hands involved with the preparation, hygienic they were with hair caps donned as well.

Bert Cullen on the barbecue was fascinated with the different shapes and sizes.

A prize giving concluded the event with certificates for the longest sausage, the smallest, the dogs breakfast and of course the tastiest. Andy Bolton won the trophy for the most success and elegantly displayed his wares around and over The Cup.  Guess what was for tea that night.

Pauanui Weekly operations 9 am – Midday, every Tuesday.

Sheddies from throughout the movement are more than welcome to visit, morning tea is usually on at 10  am, come, drop in, we’re a friendly lot.
