Hike the Mount Pauanui to get a stunning view of Pauanui. Not for the faint hearted, this is a fairly strenuous climb but well worth the effort. Located at the south end of the beach the Mount Pauanui summit offers stunning views north over the beach and the rest of Pauanui.
A relatively short walk and visitors will be rewarded with spectacular 360-degree views. Displays are placed at the summit identifying parts of the panorama and rich history of the area. It is accessed from the car park at the end of Paku Drive, Tairua. There are also some great views of the coast looking north.
Directions: From Tairua town centre follow Manaia Road, turn right into Paku Drive, and then right into Tirinui Crescent. The start of the track is signposted from the end of the crescent.
Time: 30-45 minutes return
Note: Steep last 10-15 metres
Ten minutes to Flat Rock - This is an easy walk, which leaves the southern end of the beach at the end of Pauanui Beach Road. The track undulates gently through the bush with some rock hopping from Flat Rock through to Cave Bay. There are great views along the track looking back along the beach.
The Pinnacles Track climbs through ruggedly beautiful mountain ranges in the Coromandel Peninsula. It's one of New Zealand's most popular overnight walks.
